Why Choose Trauma-Sensitive Yoga at Union Street Yoga

At Union Street Yoga, we understand that our clients who are working through complex trauma have specific needs, and in keeping with our commitment to offer trauma-sensitive programming and interventions for our clients, we are proud to offer a trauma-sensitive yoga program taught by Sue Stevens our Certified Trauma Center Trauma- Sensitive Yoga Facilitator. The classes are set up so that students are in control over what they are doing with their body at all times and the teacher is there to provide safe, professional guidance to help facilitate healing.

The Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an evidence based treatment designed specifically for clients who have experienced trauma, and the classes are gender-specific.  This model is adaptive, and works to meet the individualized needs of each student, and no yoga experience is necessary.

What is Trauma Center Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY)?

TCTSY classes help participants feel comfortable in their bodies, learn self-regulation skills, and improve their ability to direct attention away from ruminative thought processes. Students will be invited to explore slow, gentle yoga movements in a relaxed and safe environment.

How are Trauma-Sensitive Yoga classes different than other types of yoga classes?

  • The teacher has experience and extensive training in Trauma-Sensitive Yoga practices.

  • TCTSY helps to manage the symptoms of anxiety, acute stress, PTSD and increases the capacity for healing, well being, and health.

  • There are gender specific classes with no physical hands-on adjustments.

  • Attention will be paid to the potential for feelings of vulnerability in certain yoga postures.

  • The teacher will continually offer options, allowing students to practice making empowered choices, opting in or out of any portion of the class at any time.

  • The class offers students the opportunity to rebuild a connection with oneself and to help them feel safe in their bodies again.

If you have tried a regular, public yoga class and felt uncomfortable, please consider trying this class.  Research has shown that TCTSY has many evidence-based benefits for those who have experienced trauma.
